Pillar 07

Ownership over Process

"Own the outcome, bend the process"

Process is a tool. When the tool becomes the master, something has gone wrong.

Own outcomes, not activities. Bend process when it gets in the way of results. And never blame the system for your failures — if the system is broken, fixing it is part of the job.

What This Means in Practice

  • Ask “what outcome do we need?” before “what’s the process?”
  • Take responsibility for results, not just for following steps
  • Change broken processes instead of complaining about them
  • Lead by example, not by procedure

Common Traps

  • Following process even when it clearly isn’t working
  • Saying “that’s not my job” or “that’s not how we do things”
  • Blaming Agile/Scrum/OKRs for poor results
  • Hiding behind procedure to avoid hard decisions

Remember

Own the outcome. Adapt the process.
